Pregnancy Chiropractic
The spine and pelvis are asked to change shape for nine months. A lot of the ache that comes with that has a joint you can find, and a setup that never presses the abdomen.
Understanding it
What is a pregnancy visit?
Ligaments loosen so the pelvis can make room for birth. The same looseness makes the low back and the sacroiliac joints easier to strain as the bump moves your weight forward. The low back arches more, small joints take more load, and a nerve can be bothered. Back pain, pelvic pain, and sciatica are common. They are not a requirement of pregnancy.
Positioning is side-lying or otherwise supported. There is no contact through the abdomen. The aim is to ease the segment that is stuck, take pressure off an irritable nerve, and keep the pelvis moving as evenly as the stage allows.
This page explains how a visit is organised. It is not a diagnosis. Get urgent medical care for sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever with spine pain, or pain after a major fall or crash.
Root patterns
Why the back and pelvis hurt
These are structural, and most of them can be worked with at any trimester.
Looser ligaments
From early on, ligaments are more giving. Joints that were already stiff become symptomatic once they are less stable.
Weight shifting forward
The low back arches to balance the bump. Facet joints and discs take a longer day of compression.
The sacroiliac joints
They transfer the weight of the trunk into the pelvis. One side often becomes the sore one, felt across the back of the pelvis.
Sciatica
A lumbar nerve, or the way the pelvis now sits, can send pain through the buttock and down a leg.
Groin and pubic pain
The joint at the front of the pelvis and the round ligaments can stab when you walk or roll in bed.
Sleep on one side
Hours in one shape, with a bump that makes turning hard, loads the spine unevenly all night.
Progression
What changes each trimester
The demand is different at twelve weeks and at thirty-six. The setup of the table changes with it.
01First
Looser, before the bump is heavy
Old stiff segments can start to talk as ligaments give. Nausea and fatigue also change how you sit. An early check sets a baseline.
02Second
The weight arrives
The bump clears the pelvis, the low back arches, and pelvic pain often starts. Positioning is still straightforward. This is a comfortable window for care.
03Third
The heaviest weeks
Sciatica, pelvic girdle pain, and pubic pain tend to peak. Contacts stay off the abdomen. Pelvic balance is the focus, including how you will move in labour. It does not promise a particular kind of birth.
04After
Feeding, lifting, and still-loose joints
Ligaments stay looser for a while, especially with breastfeeding. Early checks aim to settle the pelvis before that looseness firms up around a twist.
Care can continue through the third trimester when the setup is adapted. Sudden severe pain, bleeding, fluid loss, a severe headache, or reduced baby movement is maternity care the same day, not a chiropractic booking.
Recognition
Common, and still worth a look
You do not have to wait the pregnancy out if a joint is clearly the driver.
Low back or sacrum
A deep ache or a sharp catch. Very common, and often mechanical.
Pelvic girdle pain
Across the back of the pelvis, one sacroiliac joint, or the pubic joint. Walking, stairs, and turning in bed are the triggers.
A line of pain down the leg
Pregnancy sciatica, usually from the low back or the pelvis.
Tingling in the hands
Fluid can crowd the median nerve. The wrist and the neck are both worth a look.
Neck and headache
From the second trimester, posture and a heavier chest load the upper back and neck.
“Rolling in bed was the worst part of the third trimester. Ampang used a side-lying setup, nothing on the bump, and the pelvic catch on the stairs became manageable.”

Questions
Common questions
When the chiropractor adapts pressure, position, and the stage, yes. Nothing is done through the abdomen. Tell us about complications, and we will coordinate with your maternity team when needed.
