Neck Pain
Stiffness, a headache, or tingling into the arm is the neck reporting a specific level. The visit listens at that level, not at the whole column.
Understanding it
What is neck pain?
The neck is seven vertebrae, their discs, small joints, nerves, and the muscles that hold up the head. It has to carry that weight and still turn farther than any other part of the spine, which is why it complains so often.
A dull morning stiffness and pain that runs into the shoulder or hand are different problems. The second usually means a nerve is involved. Each segment is checked on its own, and only the one that fails the checks is contacted. In the neck, a vague twist is the wrong tool.
This page explains how a visit is organised. It is not a diagnosis. Get urgent medical care for sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever with spine pain, or pain after a major fall or crash.
Root patterns
What usually loads the neck
Almost every stubborn neck story has a mechanical driver. These are the ones we see most.
The head sitting forward
Every bit the head travels in front of the shoulders adds load. Phones and laptops are now the common reason adults under forty have a sore neck.
A long day at a desk
A low screen, a high chair, or a keyboard that is too far keeps the neck in one shape for hours. Discs and small joints take that uneven load all day.
Discs that have lost height
Cervical discs dry and thin with age. The openings where nerves leave can narrow, which is a frequent source of arm pain and tingling.
A sudden whip or fall
A crash, a sports impact, or a fall can strain joints and soft tissue. The ache often arrives days later, once the swelling shows up.
The pillow
Too flat, too high, or too soft holds the neck in a stressed shape for the whole night. Mornings are then the worst part of the day.
Stress in the shoulders
When the upper shoulders stay tight for weeks, they tug on the neck. The joints slowly stop sharing motion.
Progression
How a stiff neck can change
Early stiffness is mostly muscle and joint. Later stages can involve a nerve or, rarely, the cord. Those are not the same visit.
01Early
Stiff and local
Turning is limited after a night or a strain. Muscle guarding is the main finding. A specific check here can stop it becoming a structural habit.
02Spreading
Pain leaves the neck
Shoulder, arm, or forearm pain appears. Tingling in the fingers means a nerve root is being bothered, not only a tight muscle.
03Ongoing
The posture has joined in
The head lives forward, the shoulders round, and motion stays small. Muscles have learned the compensation. Change is still possible and takes longer.
04Cord
Clumsy hands or unsteady walking
If wear or a disc presses the spinal cord, hands get clumsy and balance suffers. That needs urgent medical care, not a routine neck contact.
Most neck pain has a segment you can name. The point of the exam is to name it, so the contact is not a general crack.
Recognition
Patterns worth naming
Pain into the arm or tingling in the fingers changes the plan. Say so at the first visit.
You cannot finish a turn
Looking over one shoulder to reverse the car is the usual test.
Ache where the skull sits
Pressure at the top of the neck, often with a headache.
Pain into the shoulder or arm
The pain has left the neck itself.
A headache from the neck
It starts at the base of the skull and moves forward.
Fingers that tingle
A nerve root is changing what the hand feels.
“Turning to reverse the car had been a wince for months. After the Ampang exam named one stuck segment, that was the only contact. The morning headache eased with it.”

Questions
Common questions
It can be, when it is specific, light enough for the finding, and done after the exam. It is not a twist of every joint in the neck.
